EDUCATIONAL STUDENT TOURS TO PLACES OF INTEREST

Each term there are several educational visits planned to complement the teaching of many subjects.

Frequent visits are made to places and events of interest in and around Lagos including visits to corporate and government offices, factories, technical and agricultural workshops.

Foreign visits, both educational and recreational such as Geography group visits to Kenya take place, with others planned.

The 'French Connection' is also offered to our children. This involves visits to 'The French Village' and ECOWAS Francophone Countries.

As part of community and citizenship development, regular visits are made to motherless babies homes, orphanages, old peoples homes and destitutes with gifts and well-wishes.

MUSIC AND DRAMA UNIT

Dowen College has a large and active music department run by qualified and experienced music teachers. Students are encouraged to take an interest in this area and we are proud of the results. A variety of instruments are taught including the piano, organ, flute, clarinet, saxophone, recorder, trumpet, guitar, drums and violin. Students are encouraged to take external graded music examinations. The school orchestra is a great attraction for many students.

The school choir is carefully trained to beautiful effect.

There is class singing, informal music appreciation and concerts organised where the children and staff perform for selected audiences.

Groups of children often attend musical shows where they see and hear first-class concerts, operas, and recitals.

Drama flourishes with a lively programme of regular plays and musicals, which involve as many students as possible. Apart from English and Music departments, Art, Home Economics and other departments play a prominent role in all activities.

Drama at Dowen is organised to develop the more creative, holistic side of the students' minds. We believe that children should develop sound learning habits fuelled by their natural curiosity and enthusiasm. At Dowen College we therefore train them to work hard and think constructively.

Our approach encourages a life of learning and an appreciation of te value and enjoyment of work. Teaching is straightforward, we use the best of traditional methods with the best of modern.

A standard well maintained swimming pool is visited by parties of students weekly under careful supervision. For some, this is recreational while for others it is an opportunity for competitive swimming.

In all sports, at all levels, healthy competition is encouraged. A major part of development program is to build a "Sports Complex" containing Swimming Pool, Basketball Court, Squash and Badmington courts, Track and Field arena and Cricket Pitch.
