Provision is made for outdoor activities and clubs through which students can further express themselves, learn to socialise properly, learn to give free service to mankind and develop a healthy spirit of competition.

Such activities include Tennis, Golf, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, School Choir, Scouts Girl Guides, Gymnastics, Karate, Taekwondo, Drama, Crafts, Cookery, Chess, Debating, Computer and Music.

Emphasis is placed on community relationships and civic responsibilities.

The Dowen College Mathematics Club

This club was introduced:
1. To help remove `mathsphobia', the fear of Mathematics, which
students generally have; and to make them see that Mathematics
is a subject which can be enjoyed and understood.
2. To help students learn steps towards developing conceptual
and manipulative skills in Mathematics.
3. To encourage and prepare potential Mathematicians,
Engineers and Scientists through:

1. Interactive play methods. i.e. the use of Mathematical
games and models.
2. Regular quiz, lectures and seminars; with students themselves
as major participants.
3. Personality appreciation i.e. discussion and talks about early
Mathematicians and Scientists - their early lives and impact made
in the world of Mathematics.

The French Club

The French Club is an association of interested French Students in
Dowen College. The French Club was set up to encourage the use
of French Language; and members can easily express themselves
in French. We have qualified and experienced teachers handling
this club. Club meetings are held on Wednesday.

Part of our aims and objectives include:

1. Oral expressions
2. Exposing our students to the culture and civlisation of
French-speaking people.
3. Educational visits to Francophone Countries.
4. Making frindship with french speaking people.
5. Creative activities directed towards the proper acquisition
of the French Language.

Cultural Club


Dowen is an International School, the club is made up of people
from different parts of the world. We try as much as possible to
depict the culture of the environment and also that of the
international communities.

We have a lot of activities in the school and we feature them
anytime we have an event in the schoolsuch as Founders Day
and Drama Day, and especially on our Cultural Day celebration.

The students perform in various cultural activities depicting
various cultires such as:

* Fashion Parade (Attires)
* Hair Styles
* Traditional Dance
* Drama
* Art and Craft work
* Art Exhibition
* Traditional Food Exhibition (Various Cultures)

Press Club

Aims and Objectives

* To develop students' curiosity and consciousness about events around
them and beyond.
* To instill adventurism and a sense of humour.
* To develp students' analytical and objectivitiy in erporting events.
* To develop reportoroial skills and literary ability in journalistic writing of
all styles
* To conduct interviews and contribute to the production of the school magazine,
"Dowen Vision".
* To enhance observational skills and selection of relevant materials for writing

Membership

Membership is open to all interested students.

The Literary and Debating Society

The Literary and Debating Society is a viable club which is compulsory for all
students of the college. it provide a forum for the development of creative
abilities of our students in the two major categories language use -
speech and writing

Aims and Objectives

* To develop all facets of communicative skills.
* To develop the ability to communicate ideas effectively through speech.
* To develop the ability to brainstorm, select, organise, and present ideas coherently.
* To participate in debates and otheforms of public speaking.
* To participate in impromptu speeches.
* To acquire confidence, poise, auidience rapport and eloquence.
* To develop thhe creative use of imagination, appropriate words, idioms,
figurative language and various sentence structures in literary writing, namely
poems, short stories, plays and even novels.
* To develop the interactive and communicative skills of each student in
order to become an all-round, balanced, refined and cultured personality.

Activities

The Literary and Debating Society organises on a regualr basis intra-
and inter-school debates, impromptu speeches, spelling, essay
and reading competitions

The Music Club

The Music Club was established to enhance the performing capabilty and
talents of interested students.
It also enables the students toput into practical use, the knowledge of
rudimentsand theory of Music which they have learnt in the classroom.

The Music Club has three sections:

* The Choir
* The Orchestra
* The Stage Band

Each of these sections is supervised and directed by a seasoned and
experienced Music Tutor.

The students are encouraged to join any or all of these musical groups
where they are taught the art of singing and playing of musical instruments.

The Music Club has been very active as it has always performed at the
social and extra-curricular programmes of the school. It also honours
invitations to perform at other secondary schools within and outside
its immediate environment.
